It invokes the same feelings of isolation on a very mysterious island once populated by an enterprising individual with way too much time on their hands. But it feels more like Obduction, due to being a metroidvania sort of game, so it's very easy to get stuck and distracted (but much more fulfilling as the map opens up). There are also some fun scripted sequences, but also some very obtuse puzzles and poor implementation that can completely styme you (like, to use a water well, you have to stand at a very specific spot).It also overuses a kind of puzzle that involves turning several objects simultaneously until they all line up correctly, which become so damn easy once you know the trick.Overall, I really liked it, but feel sad that a walkthrough (or unlimited time) is required. I do hope for a sequel. When one cannot add a bucket to a well, the initial assumption is that the combination isn't allowed. When it turns out to be just a programming issue, then there was no way to do what the game intended without pure luck of being in exactly the right spot or else dumb persistence.Additionally, there was this puzzle in the underwater section that was actually cut out (leaving an oddly empty room) after launch because of criticism.Next, it's difficult to see the absence of something transparent like glass.Also, quite a few of the diagrams were obtuse and had more than a few interpretations (especially the one for building a battery in the mines).
Quern – Undying Thoughts is an excellent first-person puzzle game that’s likely to be doubly special to anyone who spent hours with Riven in years past. Reminiscent of both that style of storytelling and of puzzle design, it’s an excellent homage in an era suddenly packed full of Myst homages.A few subpar puzzles and some ill-paced backtracking sometimes get in the way of Quern’s ambitions, but my standard adventure game advice applies: Just check a walkthrough if you really feel the need to. It’s worth seeing through to the end.
